California DTSC Packaging Requirements — What Hazmat Generators Need to Know

California's Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) requires hazardous waste generators to use UN-certified containers for all waste collected by a licensed transporter. This applies to both small quantity generators (SQGs) and large quantity generators (LQGs) operating under 22 CCR. Containers must display the UN certification marking, packing group rating, and maximum gross weight. Steel drums (UN1A1, UN1A2), poly drums, cubic yard hazmat boxes (UN4G), and FIBC bulk bags that carry UN certification all meet this requirement.

Open Head vs Tight Head Drums — How to Choose

Open head drums have a removable lid secured by a bolt ring — use these for solid and semi-solid waste that requires access through the top. Tight head drums have a fixed lid with bung openings only — use these for liquids. Choosing the wrong style for your waste stream is one of the most common ordering mistakes. If your waste is pourable, choose tight head. If it requires scooping, shoveling, or manual loading, choose open head.

Poly Drums vs Steel Drums — Which is Right for Your Waste?

Choose poly when your waste is acidic or caustic (steel corrodes), when outdoor storage is needed (poly won't rust in Southern California's coastal climate), or when lighter weight is required for manual handling. Choose steel when contents are flammable solvents that require a grounding path, when regulatory specifications require steel, or when crush resistance is critical. How to Choose the Right Hazmat Box for Solid Waste

Cubic yard hazmat boxes (HSC containers) are UN4G certified for solid hazardous waste in packing groups I, II, and III. One cubic yard box replaces approximately seven 55-gallon drums in volume — consolidating your waste into a single container with a single freight charge. They are accepted by all California DTSC-licensed hazardous waste transporters and are available for flat-rate local delivery throughout Southern California from our Compton, CA warehouse.
