UN Poly Drums & Pails — Southern California

Sana Terra's UN-certified polyethylene drums and pails give California businesses a rust-free, lightweight alternative to steel for hazardous waste storage and transport. Our poly drum lineup runs from 5-gallon pails to 57-gallon specialty drums, with open head and tight head configurations available in natural, black, and blue. All drums are HDPE construction, UN-certified, and available for flat-rate local delivery across Southern California from our Compton, CA warehouse.

Poly Drum vs Steel Drum — When to Choose Plastic

The choice between poly and steel comes down to your waste stream chemistry and your storage environment. Here is a straightforward guide:

Choose Poly When …

  • Contents are acidic or caustic (steel corrodes)

  • Outdoor storage is needed (poly won't rust)

  • Lighter weight is required for manual handling

  • Visual inspection without opening is needed (natural/clear)

  • Chemical compatibility favors HDPE

Choose Steel When …

  • Contents are flammable solvents (requires grounding)

  • Regulatory spec requires steel containers

  • Extreme temperature environments

  • Contents are incompatible with HDPE

  • Higher crush resistance is required

HDPE Chemical Compatibility — What You Can Store in a Poly Drum

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is compatible with most acids, bases, alcohols, and aqueous solutions — making it one of the most versatile container materials for California industrial waste streams. Common compatible waste types include hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, isopropyl alcohol, bleach solutions, and aqueous inorganic waste.

HDPE is NOT compatible with aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylene), chlorinated solvents (methylene chloride, TCE), or concentrated oxidizers. For these waste streams, use our carbon steel or stainless steel drums instead.

Outdoor Storage in Southern California — Why Poly Outperforms Steel

California's coastal climate — marine layer moisture, salt air near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and seasonal temperature swings — accelerates corrosion on uncoated steel drums. Poly drums require zero rust-prevention treatment, no coating maintenance, and can be stored on exposed loading docks, outdoor yards, or uncovered concrete pads indefinitely without degradation.

For warehouses and facilities along the LA harbor, in the Port of Long Beach industrial corridor, or anywhere within five miles of the coast, poly drums are the more durable long-term choice for outdoor hazmat storage.

Size Guide: 30, 55, and 57 Gallon Drums

•       30 gallon — Ideal for small-quantity generators, confined storage spaces, and labs. Available in tight head and open head.

•       55 gallon — The standard workhorse for California EHS programs. Available in natural, black, and blue in both open and tight head configurations.

•       57 gallon open head with bung lid — A specialty format preferred by pharmaceutical and food-adjacent facilities that need slightly more capacity than the standard 55-gallon drum without stepping up to salvage drum size.

UN-Certified 5-Gallon Pails — Life Latch Design

Our 5-gallon poly pail features the Life Latch positive-latch lid mechanism — a tamper-evident closure that secures without tools and provides a reliable seal for small-quantity hazardous waste. The pail is UN-certified for packing groups I, II, and III and is widely used by California auto shops for small-quantity used oil, solvents, and paint waste collection.

Color Guide: Natural, Black, and Blue

•       Natural (clear/white) — Allows visual inspection of contents without opening. Preferred for labs and facilities tracking multiple waste streams.

•       Black — Opaque, UV-resistant. Preferred for outdoor storage and light-sensitive materials.

•       Blue — Color-coded for easy identification. Commonly used for specific waste stream segregation programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I store acids in a poly drum?

Yes — HDPE is compatible with most common acids including hydrochloric, sulfuric (dilute), nitric (dilute), and phosphoric acid. For concentrated sulfuric or nitric acid, contact us to confirm compatibility before ordering.

Are poly drums suitable for outdoor storage in Southern California?

Yes. HDPE poly drums are UV-stabilized and weather-resistant, making them ideal for outdoor storage in California's climate. They will not rust, corrode, or require surface treatment.

What is the weight capacity of a 55-gallon poly drum?

Our 55-gallon open and tight head poly drums are rated for up to 800 lbs of liquid gross weight. Always verify your specific waste stream weight against the drum's rated capacity before filling.
